ABOUT 62,000 people in Katakwi district are facing famine, the district chairman, John Robert Ekongot, has said. Ekongot said this was due to the failed harvest for the last three years after floods, drought and water lodging affected the district.

He said the most affected sub-counties were Omodoi, Ongongoja, Magoro and Ngariam where, he said, people survive on one meal a day, while others spend a day without eating.

Ekongot was speaking at a function on Saturday to thank the Government for appointing Katakwi Woman MP Lt. Jessica Alupo as state minister for the youth.

Alupo was accompanied by the state minister for defence, Lt. Gen. Jeje Odongo. Ekongot appealed to the Government for more food relief until the next harvest season expected in June.

Alupo and Odongo advised the people of Katakwi to continue supporting the NRM party. “The way you have welcomed us shows that you love the one who appionted us and that you also appreciate what has been given to you,” Odongo said.
