KAMPALA City Council is to crackdown on contractors who do not put boards showing their qualifications at construction sites.

Simon Muhumuza, the KCC spokesman, said such contractors were breaking the city building laws and would be punished if discovered.

“They must put up the boards showing the professionals doing the work such as architects and structural engineers. “It is people who employ unqualified staff that avoid putting up the boards,” he said.

Muhumuza was responding to queries concerning the absence of such requirements on some sites in the city. Use of unqualified engineers has been blamed for collapsing buildings in the city.

number of people have died at construction sites in the city has of late experienced “You can’t put up the name of an architect for example who is not involved on your board” Muhumuza said.

He said they had even stopped some firms from putting up buildings when they had no such boards.

“They complained bitterly saying as board was such a small thing but we insisted we were following the regulations” he said.

There are still a number of building sites without any boards indicating who are involved in the work in the city.

Interest in the boards has been rekindled after several buildings collapsed in Kampala with fatal results.

Industry sources said one an important reason for avoiding the boards was to keep the identity of the building secret given the highly confidential and sometimes crooked deals involved in acquiring plots in Kampala.

“Some people do not want to be known as being owners until the building is completed. So they avoid putting up the boards as they would have their names” they said
