Has UHRC closed shop?

EDITOR— A month ago, Parliament vetted some commissioners for the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC). Since then, everything has gone quiet and there is no word as to when they will resume office. Did they fail the interview?

For four months hundreds of workers have been earning taxpayers’ money at the UHRC without doing any work! Meanwhile, hundreds of complaints continue to pile up at the Commission without anyone hearing them! Will the poor of this country ever get justice?

This is the only Government institution where we can get redress without hiring lawyers but it seems our last hope has vanished. Whenever we inquire about the fate of our complaints, we are told that there are no commissioners to hear them. Does anyone out there care about the poor of this country?

Even the media which is supposed to be the watchdog in society has kept quiet about the matter! And this Government says it is committed to protecting people’s human rights! Can the concerned minister say something?
