MATHIAS ‘Cobra’ Okwir and Aojan Orisa gave Uganda a sensational doubles victory that thwarted a Kenyan sweep at the Uganda Darts Open in Jinja on Sunday.

The Police marksmen beat Gulu’s James Lanek and Charles Okumu 4-2 in an all-Ugandan final.

But the real battle for the champions came in the semi-final where they prevailed over Kenya’s David Warui and Evans Njuguna 3-0 in a closely contested tie.

The Ugandan top pair missed the chance of avenging the Kenyan feat in the singles event. It was an all-Kenyan final as Ibrahim Ambuta overcame Peter Wanjie 4-1.

Okwir, who is nicknamed Cobra for his perfect shots, earned a special award after notching a record nine-dart finish in the event.

The feat of finishing with the least darts left Tanzanian Japeth John in tears at the Source of the Nile Garden Pub.

“We were let down by poor finishing. We need to work on our finishing touches. I am sure we shall destroy them next time,” promised the Police Darts Club kingpin after the event.

Kenya also nearly swept the inter-state event in the East Africa Darts Federation meet save for Uganda’s Rose Amoding and Sarah Kitogo who pulled victory in the women’s doubles.

The two-day regional championship that attracted 200 participants, runs alongside the Uganda Open. It was sponsored by Bank of Uganda and Nile Breweries.

Next year’s edition will be hosted by the Kenya Darts Association.
