2008 SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES: Mugabe, Flavia Namakula, Moses Kipsiro and the Women’s Rugby team

MUGABE is the youngest of the four contenders. The 19-year old is arguably the face of Ugandan tennis and yet shy to talk about his own achievements.

He won the 2008 ITF/East Africa U-18 circuit men’s singles and doubles in Kampala before promising to turn professional later this year.

Mugabe reached the last eight of the ITF/Futures Burundi leg singles and won the men’s doubles. He was a semifinalist in the Gabon F2 Futures.

Mugabe was chosen on the ITF/Grand Slam touring team that played a series of junior tennis tournaments in Morocco.
He feels Kipsiro is top contender for the award.

“If Kipsiro wins it I will not feel cheated because I watched him at the recent World Cross Country and concluded he is great.”
