THE Nakawa resident district commissioner, Fred Bamwine, has warned Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) against wasting funds meant for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

“Poor accountability is a problem in this country. However, NGOs should ensure that the funds they receive to help the needy are accounted for,” Bamwine said.

He was on Friday speaking at the handover of two container houses to HIV/AIDS patients under the care of Reach Out Mbuya HIV/AIDS Initiative, at Banda, a Kampala suburb.

The six houses were constructed by SPEDAG, a clearing and forwarding firm, at sh45m. Reach Out Mbuya looks after 490 persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Bamwine said with better accountability, the NGOs would attract more funding from development partners and in the process, be more able to help vulnerable groups.

Bamwine appealed to the Government to partner with the NGOs to assist the vulnerable people.

Bamwine commended SPEDAG and Reach Out Mbuya HIV/AIDS Initiative for aiding the vulnerable groups especially those living with HIV/AIDS.

Bamwine urged the organisation to extend its services outside Kampala.

The SPEDAG general manager, Joram Nyanzi, said the organisation was touched to help the charity organisation in line with its corporate social responsibility to combat the AIDS pandemic. He pledged his company’s continued support to the organisation.

Nyanzi said SPEDAG would hold an art exhibition on Saturday from which proceeds would be used to assist the persons living with HIV/AIDS.

The Reach Out executive director, Dr. Stella Alamo, thanked SPEDAG for helping them accommodate the stigmatised persons living with HIV/AIDS.
The function was also attended by the Nakawa LC3 chairperson, Protazio Kintu and Dr. Florence Kitabire from the Centres of Disease Control.
