THE Democratic Party (DP) has dismissed allegations by the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader, Kizza Besigye, that some
members were spying on the party.

“As DP, we dismiss the allegations. The DP stands for its values and fights to put right political leadership in the country,” said Kenneth Paul Kakande, the DP chairperson for Nakawa division.

He was addressing journalists yesterday at the party headquarters in Kampala, and accused Besigye of interfering with DP activities.

“It is not Besigye’s duty to act as DP spokesperson. His focus should be on solving FDC issues,” Kakande said.

On Saturday, while addressing mourners at a funeral in Wakiso district, Besigye accused some DP members of spying on their party.

“We challenge Besigye and give him three days to name the people he calls spies within the DP,” he said.

Kakande added that if the FDC leader failed to respond within that time, “the leadership of the DP would convene and forge the way forward about his statement”.

In a multiparty system, political parties must respect each other, regardless of performance, he stressed.

DP also appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, to institute an independent commission of inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment in the Police.

“The commission can be instituted but should exclude all Police officers,” said Fred Mwesigwa, DP’s publicity secretary, adding that only Kayihura should represent the Police on the commission.

Mwesigwa urged the Police to promote qualified female officers to top posts.

The DP is also soon opening an office in Bugiri district, however, he said reports from the district officials suggested that the area Police chief and resident district commissioner questioned the party’s legal status to hold a rally in the district.

Kakande cautioned the officials not to interfere with the party’s activities saying DP was registered and operated within the legal framework of political parties.
