KAMPALA - A defence lawyer in a criminal appeal has withdrawn from the case because the appellant completed serving the sentence. Stephen Mubiru told the Supreme Court that by the time he was instructed to represent the appellant, the convict had already been discharged from prison after serving six years. The criminal appeal by Samuel Akampurira, who was convicted of defilement, had come up for hearing after he completed his prison term. Akampurira pleaded guilty at trial and was sentenced to six years, but he appealed the sentence, complaining that it was harsh. According to the record, Akampurira defiled a 14-year-old school girl on April 16, 2001 at Bukuya trading centre in Mubende district.
Ssebugwawo woos Kamya
KAMPALA - The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate in the Rubaga LC3 chairman byelection, Joyce Ssebugwawo, has asked Rubaga North MP Betty Kamya to join her campaigns. Ssebugwawo said Kamya’s support would contribute a lot to her victory in the race. “Kamya is an influential and outspoken person. I know it would be a smooth race if she joined my campaign. If I did anything wrong to her, I am ready to apologise,†she said after a rally in Nakulabye recently. In March, FDC suspended Kamya for six months after a misunderstanding between her and the party leadership.
Suspect to appear in 2012
WAKISO - The Magistrates’ Court at Entebbe has adjourned a robbery case to 2012 due to absence of a principal witness. Consequently, Kenneth Ojua, a suspect who had spent seven years on remand, was returned to Kigo Prison after prosecution said the witness had travelled to Austria. The defence counsel pleaded that Ojua had overstayed on remand and there was no certainty that the witness would appear next time. But Justice Elizabeth Musoke ruled that since it was the first time Ojua was appearing before court, his case would be heard in the next session in 2012.
