GULU district has received sh2.5b to rehabilitate 846km of community access roads. The money will also be used to rehabilitate six bridges, sink 10 boreholes and construct 11 classrooms, officials have said.

Addressing journalists in Gulu on Monday, the district works and technical services secretary, Alex Otim, said the money was provided by the Central Government under the Poverty Alleviation Fund, the Schools Facilities Grant, Danida and the Local Government Development Programme.
He said the funds would improve the living conditions of the community.

“We plan to use sh310m to work on the roads in Opit trading centre, which will be elevated to a town council soon. We are also lobbying for more money from development partners for feeder roads and water supply,” Otim explained.

Community access roads, he noted, were crucial to development because they link farmers to the market.

A total of 26 boreholes, Otim said, had already been sunk by the UN children’s fund, Unicef, in primary schools.

Drop in the Bucket, an American NGO, Otim disclosed, was drilling boreholes in Awach, Lukome, Koro, Opit and Awere secondary schools.

He said some of the bridges to be fixed included Maga-maga in Bobi sub-county, Larwodo and Bul-Kur in Paicho sub-county, Chome Bridge, which links Odek and Paicho sub-counties and Oitino Bridge in Patiko sub-county.He added that the district expected more funds from Germany to rehabilitate the bridges.

Otim warned the residents against vandalising the boreholes, saying they would be prosecuted.

He thanked the Government for realising that the sh340m allocated to the district for water projects was not enough.

He said the Government would allocate the district sh700m-sh800m for water in the next financial year.
