Thirty Karimojong demonstration farmers in Katikekile sub-county, Moroto district, have received over 300 goats to increase their income and improve their livelihood. Moroto district National Agriculture Advisory services coordinator Michael Lokiru recently handed over the goats to the farmers at the former Karamoja Development Agency offices.
Lokiru said the goats were meant to boost the Government’s Prosperity-For-All Programme. Each farmer received 11 female goats and one male Toggenburg to cross-breed with.
Lokiru advised the beneficiaries to protect their animals so that they could benefit from the Prosperity-For-All Programme, which aims at having every household earn a minimum of sh20m a year.
Moroto LC5 chairman Peter Ken Lochap said: “Do not sell or eat these animals. You should generate income from them to benefit your families.â€
He also called upon the Karimojong to utilise the services of the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund, which will be re-introduced in the next financial year.
“This time the second phase of NUSAF will benefit the Karimojong,†Lochap said. He said the first phase was mismanaged.
