Do fibroids cause infertility in women?

May 17, 2009

FIBROIDS are non-cancerous tumours of the uterus. The condition can occur at any age but the risk increases with advancing age.

Ask the doctor- with Dr. Gloria Ndagire

Dear Doctor,
My sister aged 29 was recently told she has fibroids in her uterus. She has tried to conceive for the past two years in vain. Could this be the cause of her infertility?

Dear GK,
FIBROIDS are non-cancerous tumours of the uterus. The condition can occur at any age but the risk increases with advancing age.

The tumour reduces fertility by decreasing blood supply to the developing embryo. But most tumours are not so big to cause serious problems.

Most women with small fibroids usually carry their pregnancies to term. Your sister should visit a gynaecologist.

It may be necessary to remove the tumours surgically if her inability to conceive cannot be explained by other causes. This normally restores fertility. All the best.
