AS voters go to the polls for the local government byelections, Kampala district authorities have promised sufficient security to ensure no malpractice.

Responding to reports of intimidation and threats of violence, the resident commissioner, Alice Muwanguzi, yesterday issued a statement warning of stern action against anyone who attempts to disrupt the exercise.
In Kampala, the most hotly contested race is the Rubaga Division LC chairperson.

Peter Ssematimba (NRM), Moses Makumbi (DP), Joyce Ssebugwawo (FDC), Henry Lubowa (Social Democratic Party) and independents Justin Ssendikadiwa, Abdul Karim Kiggundu, and Caroline Kakembo were all confident of victory.

The Rubaga Division seat fell vacant following the death of Winnie Makumbi last year.

Makumbi said: “I will win by 65%.”
Ruth Nankabirwa, the micro-finance state minister, said: “Ssematimba will win the race. The people of Rubaga need change and whoever needs service, will vote him.”

She projected that Ssematimba would take 74%of the votes. Ssebugwawo urged supporters to be alert. “We need to guard our vote. There is no way we are going to lose.”

Meanwhile, DP has set up an election squad to monitor the exercise, countywide. Party president John Ssebaana said 2,000 young men would deal with anybody who attempted to rig.

The polls for people with disabilities will be held next week on May 25.
