MAKERERE University will this year increase admissions for private sponsored students by over 5,000. The university will admit 17,220 private sponsored students up from last year’s 12,000.

The academic registrar, Amos Olar Odur, yesterday announced that the university has introduced 12 new courses.

Eight of the courses were approved by the Senate (the chief academic decision making organ of the university) but will be conducted at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in Nakawa.

The new courses at MUBS include Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management, Bachelor of Real Estate and Business Management, Bachelor of Transport and Logistics Management, Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

Other new courses are Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, which will be conducted at the Faculty of Technology. The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology has introduced bachelors degrees of science in software engineering as well as information systems.

For the last three years, the university has been admitting between 11,000 and 12,000 students following a university council directive to decongest the 85-year-old institution.

Out of the 89,921 students who sat A-level in 2008, a total of 57,510 scored two principal passes which is the minimum requirement for joining university.

Makerere’s increased in-take has reduced the number of students who will miss university admission from more than 27,000 to about 22,000. Before the increase all public and private universities combined could take only 25,000 students, leaving out about 27,000.

Private universities have already started admitting students. Last week, Makerere admitted 3,000 students on the government sponsorship scheme.

The university expects to receive more than 30,000 applicants for the private sponsorship scheme. It also expects to raise about sh4b from the 5,000 extra students.

However, the university did not indicate the fees structure. An official said officials were negotiating with the Government on the proposed fees increment.

Odur warned applicants against presenting forged documents. The applications close on June 5. The new academic year begins in August.
