THREE girls drowned at Entebbe Botanical Beach late last week, the Police have said.

Maureen Nakaayi, 14, Gloria Nantale Asiimwe, 12, Florence Namuyanja, 13, residents of Mutundwe, Kabaawo zone, in Rubaga Division, were under the care of the Missionaries of the Poor, a church-based organisation in Mutundwe, Kampala.

They were part of a group of 80 girls who had been taken for an outing by the mission’s management after completing their confirmation ceremony.

Their colleagues, who witnessed the incident, said the three swam into the deeper side of the lake.

The survivors said their teacher, Frederick Lutaire, had warned them not to venture far.

One of the missionaries, who did not want to be named, said the mission often took the girls on outings.

“It was unfortunate that this time, the girls died,” he said.

The head of the mission, Brother Aide Augustine, recorded a statement at Entebbe Police Station.

Entebbe criminal investigations chief Julius Ogwenge blamed the mission for entrusting the 80 girls to only one teacher.

All the bodies were recovered and were taken away by the girl’s parents on Saturday.
