TWO lucky students will have their school fees paid for a full year if they win the national speech competition slated for June 27.

The competition organised by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) aims at giving students an opportunity to acquire tax knowledge outside the classroom, developing their communication skills and boosting confidence.

“The contest aims at inculcating a taxpaying culture among the young generation and raise tax awareness,” said Sarah Birungi, the public and corporate affairs assistant commissioner.

The subject for the contest is: “You have been elected area Member of Parliament for your home district. Give your speech to the business community on why taxes are essential for National Development.”

The contest started with 600 students from 300 schools in Kampala, Mubende, Masaka, Wakiso, Mpigi, Mityana, Mukono, Kayunga, Luwero and Kalangala. Twenty contestants made it to the finals to be held in Nakawa.

The panel of judges comprises officials from Ministry of Education, URA and National Curriculum Development Centre and parents.
