UP to sh15m will be up for grabs in prize money in the inaugural Hared Source of the Nile half-marathon on Sunday.

World cross-country runner-up Moses Kipsiro will be one of the big names chasing the sh1m top prize inthe 21km race hosted by Uganda’s former industrial capital of Jinja.

Local athletics federation publicist Namayo Mawerere said similar prizes will be on offer for both the men and women races. Winners in the 10km event will pocket sh650,000 and all the top five in the shorter race will receive cash prizes.

By Monday’s deadline, over 900 runners had registered for the competition whose the flag-off will be at 9am. Such long races usually start at least at 7.30am.

“We’ve decided to extend the start to give the big Kampala entry adequate time to get to the venue,” explained Mawerere.

Proceeds will renovate Jinja Referral Hospital’s dilapidated maternity wing.

A blood donation exercise will be one of the day’s other activities. “Those who can’t run, should at least be able to donate blood,” organisers appealed.

There is a plan to upgrade the event to a full marathon next year. The MTN marathon is Uganda’s only 42km event.
