The Government is to spend sh34b on compensation and resettlement of over 2,600 people affected in the Bujagali Interconnection Project. The transmission line will cover 101km.

The funds will be used to finance schools, access roads and sanitation facilities in the new resettlement areas.

MPs on the national economy committee were on Wednesday inspecting the transmission line under construction, the resettlement site and the Bujagali hydro-power plant under construction.

In Nama village, residents appealed to the Government to bring schools nearer to their new resettlements, saying the nearest Universal Primary Education schools was 6km away.

“We fear that our children will be raped and sacrificed,” a concerned parent said.

William Kiryahika, the deputy executive officer of the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL), said they planned to provide electricity and water to the residents to better their livelihood.

Things to be compensated for include crops, land, graves/shrines, houses and other structures.

The chairperson of the committee, Mukitale Biraahwa (Buliisa), commended the displaced people for accepting the construction of the dam and power lines.

According to the project, a power line will run from Bujagali switchyard to join one from Owen Falls to Tororo (5km), another from Nalubaale sub-station to connect to Bujagali switchyard (8km).

A transmission line will run from Bujagali switchyard to a new sub-station at Kawanda (70.5km) and another will connect from Kawanda to a sub-station at Mutundwe (17.5km).

John Mugyenzi, the director of Uganda Electricity Generation Company, told MPs that the project would be completed by June 2011.

The dam is expected to generate 250 megawatts upon completion.
