Bitter Kadaga
- At the Anglican shrine in Namugongo last week, Deputy Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga seemed not to be happy with the absence of dignitaries during celebrations to mark Martyrs Day. Kadaga told the new bishop of Namirembe, Kityo Luwalira, that when he was being enthroned recently she saw big shots at the cathedral whom she expected to be at Namugongo also. “There is a senior Anglican. When will he ever come here? The Chief Justice is an Anglican, but he is not here. Even the main man,” Kadaga said, causing laughter.

M7’s free advice
- Although he is chauffeured, it does not mean that President Yoweri Museveni knows nothing about driving. Delivering the State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday, he was concerned that many lives had been lost due to road accidents, which would have been mostly avoided had motorists been careful. He said when he is travelling on a murram road he never allows his driver to drive at more than 80 kilometres per hour and when he is travelling on tarmac, he never lets the driver drive at more than 100 kilometres per hour. “This is technical advice free of professional fees,” the President said amidst laughter.

Cardinal’s baby
- During his pastoral work as the first African Catholic Chaplain at Makerere University, Fr. Emmanuel Wamala, now Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, became a friend to Prof. Charles Olweny, now Vice Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi. At the time, Olweny was a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at Makerere Medical School and had gone for further studies in Sweden when his wife was expecting their third-born. She went into labour at about 11:00pm and wondered whom to call and who would be willing to drive her to Mulago hospital at such a late hour. She decided to call Fr. Wamala who gladly offered to drive her to Mulago. He then waited for her. At about 1:00am, a beaming midwife rushed out of the labour room and told Fr. Wamala: “Your wife has just delivered a baby girl”.
Fr. Wamala thanked her without restraint and drove back to Makerere. Olweny made the revelation at the review of a book on Cardinal Wamala on Friday at Nsambya Bishop’s House.
