Former archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala has asked the education ministry to work with the Church to improve the academic system.

Wamala said education plays a key role in promoting development. “Education is the responsibility of the nation. It is our desire that the Government keeps its partnership with the Church in education to advance our nation,” he said.

Wamala made the remarks while presiding over the 67th anniversary celebrations of Trinity College Nabbingo in Wakiso district on Sunday. He commended the college for its excellent performance in last year’s examinations, which he attributed to the commitment of the staff, determination of the students and self-sacrifice of the parents.

Wamala commissioned a new dormitory for A’ level students, which was constructed by the parents at sh725m. The building will accommodate 250 students.

He also confirmed students into the Catholic faith. The head teacher, Cotilda Nakate Kikomeko, thanked the Church and the Government for supporting the school.

She pledged to uphold the objective of the founders in moulding all-round students who are morally upright, academically sound, socially balanced and capable of serving God and their country.

The permanent secretary in the education ministry, Francis Lubanga, asked the teachers to inculcate patriotism in the students and equip them with moral values and co-curricular skills.

Lubanga argued that countries like the US were able to attain prosperity because their citizens were taught, right from childhood, to love their country.

He pledged the Government’s support to the Church in its mission of educating children. Trinity College Nabbingo was established 67 years ago by Bishop Edward Michaud of the Missionary Society of the White Fathers, who later handed it over to the local nuns.

Finance minister Syda Bbumba and local artistes Mariam Ndagire and Joanita Kawalya are some of the prominent alumni of the school.
