KAMPALA City Council has been drawn against continental powerhouse, TP Mazembe of DR Congo in the CECAFA Clubs cup due in Khartoum and Port Sudan June 30- July 12.
In the draw released here by CECAFA secretary Nicholas Musonye yesterday, KCC are in Group B together with Tanzania Prisons, Bendair Telecom (Somalia) and Mazembe, a guest team in the tournament.
Last year’s Ugandan champions will open their campaign for the title July 1 against Mazembe in a cliff hanger at the St. Khart Stadium in Khartoum.
KCC will resume action on July 3 when they face Prisons before winding up their preliminary matches against Bendair on July 5.
Musonye said they were set for what should be the greatest and most fiercely fought out Kagame Cup.
“Continuing with our tradition of inviting guest sides, this time we have invited one of Africa’s best known teams, Tout Pussat TP Mazembe from the DR Congo,†Musonye said.
“We are also welcoming back El-Merreikh, a powerful side on the continent and the tournament’s winners in 1986 in Dar es Salaam and in 1994 at home,†he added.
Tusker FC of Kenya is defending the title they won in Dar es Salaam last year.
Group A and B matches will be played at the Merreikh and Khartoum stadia respectively while Port Sudan will host Group C.
Musonye revealed that more than $600,000 has been injected into the tournament by CECAFA partners.
The council has picked Ugandan referees Mufta Ngobi and Sam Kayondo as part of the meet officials.
