The Day of the African Child is celebrated on June 16. It is celebrated to remember the day in 1976, when thousands of black school children in Soweto, South Africa, protested the poor education.

They also demanded to be taught in their own language. For two weeks there were riots and many young boys and girls were shot.

More than 100 people died and more than 1,000 injured. The Day of the African Child has been celebrated since 1991. It was founded by the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which is now the African Union (AU).

In Uganda, this year’s celebrations will be held in Masindi, under the theme Accelerated Child Survival and Development. The chief guest at the celebrations will be the First Lady, Janet Museveni.
