PROPERTY worth million of shillings was recently destroyed in a fire that burnt a boys’ hostel at Kigezi Cleveland High School in Kabale district.

The district Police commander, Gasper Onzi-Obingu, said the fire could have been started by an arsonist.

He said at the time of the fire, electricity to the hostel and the surrounding area had been disconnected and the students were not allowed to use candles.

Martin Tukahabwa, the head teacher, said some students sustained minor injuries as they fled from the hostel.

He added that the affected students would be temporarily accommodated at the new campus at Kazigizi in Kitumba sub-county.

He called upon the community and well-wishers to donate clothing, bedding and other personal effects to the students.

Some of the students were still in their under wear and pyjamas when The New Vision visited the school.

Asiimwe Benson, a victim, said the fire started near an open window in a room that accommodated 18 students.

He said a student, Spencer Ssendegeya, was the first to see the fire and raised an alarm, which alerted the others.

In a related development, the deputy resident district commissioner, Shafic Ssekande, advised the head teachers in the district to equip their school with fire fighting equipment.
