Boys have been sold down the river!

EDITOR—I have been pondering about the current trend of affairs concerning child advocacy. This era has seen the increased advocacy for the girl child in the areas of education and human rights, among others.

The policy has sidelined the boy child as if he does not matter in society! Many organisations have come up to fight for the interests of girls, which is commendable.

However, we have also had cases of boys being sodomised and abused by parents, especially step-mothers. Little or no effort has been made by either the Government or the public to assist them in spite of their cry for help.

Women who have been chased away by their husbands are given immediate attention from organisations like FIDA, as if there are no women who have made thier homes hell for their husbands. I am persuaded that the struggle for an egalitarian society is merely egotistical, thus losing meaning.

This is because it is promoting inequality in disguise. A human right is not only the obligation of others to do good to you but it is also your obligation to do good to others.

As we continue to promote gender imbalances in our community in a bid to promote equality, we must know that we are doing more harm than good by creating a socially wild environment for the institution of marriage.

We will soon see ‘male wives’ who cannot listen to thier husbands and always demand to have their way even when they are wrong. As a result we will end up grooming a legion of effeminate fathers who cannot provide for their families but wait to be defended and provided for as a result of fear.

Though not justifiable, boys and men are increasingly becoming violent because of insecurity that confronts the male species in this competitive world and hence the desire to ‘prove a point’ as a man.

It is time we looked at the rights of the boy child rights by giving equal attention to both boys and girls. Boys too, need to be defended as girls are. This will create a friendly environment for our children by avoiding exaltation of one side at the expense of the other.

This will see the rise of a balanced society where interdependence is given opportunity to thrive because men need women as women need men.
