BENJAMIN Kiplagat set a new 3000m steeplechase national record of 8 minutes 12.98 seconds at the Ostrava Golden Spike event in the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

The lanky athlete, showed early signs of improving on his personal best of 8:14.29, despite the windy conditions that also played against the pursuers of the 7:53.63 world record.

With two pace setters in the pack, and the experienced Kenyan trio of Ezekiel Kemboi, Olympic champion Brimin Kipruto and Paul Koech, together with Bahrain’s Tareq Tahel, it was anticipated that the world record would fall.

And when the start gun went off, Kiplagat made the wise decision to stay with the leading group.
By the end of the second last lap of the seven and half lap-race, he seemed to run out of energy and what was left was for him to make a respectable finish.

As Kemboi and Kipruto broke off after going over the last jump, Kiplagat tried to chase but could not close the gap. He finished three seconds off the pace.

Compatriot Ben Siwa, making his maiden Grand Prix appearance, finished 14th in the same race.
