THE Church of Uganda tomorrow names a new Anglican bishop for the northern Uganda diocese.

According to the church sources, the House of Bishops meeting in Kampala will chose between reverends John Olanya and John Gakumba to replace Bishop Nelson Onono Onweng.

The source said the two names were seived out from 12 candidates and submitted to the House, which has the powers to name the bishop.

Olanya is the mission coordinator of the diocese and a lecturer in Gulu University, while Gakumba, a former vicar of Christs Church Archdeaconry in Gulu, is the Chaplain of St. Francis Church-Luzira in Kampala.

The out-going vicar of Christ Church, the Rev. Walter Kidega, on Sunday told the congregation that there would be thanksgiving service at the church on Tuesday after the new bishop has been elected.

The bishop is expected to be consecrated in November.

Onweng, who played an active role in the northern Uganda peace process, including establishing direct contact with the Lords’ Resistance Army rebel leader, Joseph Kony, retired recently.
