SPRINTER Emily Nanziri and javelin thrower Patrick Kibwota fly out tonight for the World University Games starting in Belgrade, Serbia next week.

National University Sports Federation in Uganda secretary Patrick Ssebuliba, yesterday confirmed that the two are in the first batch to leave.

Ssebuliba said they were waiting for sponsorship for other athletes.

“These two are travelling on tickets courtesy of the organising committee,” Ssebuliba said.

“We are looking at government and other universities to sponsor the other athletes.”

The team has been boosted by National Council of Sports who offered 60 tracksuits and the Serbian Embassy, which waived visa fees.

Steeplechase runner Simon Ayeko who won two silver medals (3000m and 5000m) in last year’s edition will lead Uganda’s hunt for honours.

Wilson Busienei’s triple gold medal haul in 2005 and Francis Yiga’s silver in Daegu in 2003 are Uganda’s other medallists at the event.

* Eastern Africa 200m youth champion, Agnes Aneno, will lead a team of four to the World Youth Athletics Championships due July 8-12 in Italy.
Aneno, who won the 200m and got a bronze in the long jump in the regional meet, is out to win a maiden medal at the IAAF event. Aneno will travel with Haadi Nsamba, Christopher Nangwa and Soyikwa Kibet.
