TEN candidates have expressed interest in contesting for the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) presidency, the vice-president of the party said on Tuesday.

Badru Wegulo said the UPC cabinet would soon appoint a commission to organise the election of the Delegates Conference, which will elect the next president.

Speaking at the launch of a manifesto for Sospater Akwenyu, one of the candidates, Wegulo said the party was preparing for the 2011 general elections.

Prominent among the candidates are former UN diplomat Olara Otunnu, UK-based Joseph Ochieno and former UPC Presidential Policy Commission member Peter Mayiga.

Wegulo said according to the party’s constitution, each candidate would be required to get the support of at least a third of the party members to qualify for the presidential candidacy .

Wegulo noted that some people within the party were causing confusion.

“Some people are trying to misinform the public about our candidates but they will not succeed,” he said.

Lira MP Jimmy Akena, who is also the new deputy national chairman of the party, dismissed allegations that the party was divided.

“A lot has been said about our party. Much of it is speculation. As members of the party, we are facing many challenges. Let’s work together to see the mighty Congress rise and shine again,” Akena said.
