A row has erupted between politicians from Karugutu, Kanara and Rwebisengo sub-counties over the location of the newly proposed Ntoroko district headquarters.

Ntoroko is currently a county in Bundibugyo. Whereas politicians from Rwebisengo and Kanara argue that the district headquarters should be at Rwebisengo trading centre, those in Karugutu say it should be at Karugutu trading centre.

The two groups have since petitioned the Speaker of Parliament. Presenting their petition to the Speaker, Edward Sekandi, politicians from Rwebisengo argued that the trading centre was centrally located, adding that three- quarters of the population in the county were nearer Rwebisengo than Karugutu.

The group leader, John Kisembo, said Rwebisengo had already prepared a building and land to house the district headquarters. Kisembo also said the location of the Tooro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve in the middle of the county made communication between Karugutu sub-county and the rest of the county difficult as people cannot move through the reserve due to the presence of wild animals.

However, politicians from Karugutu last month urged that their area was also centrally located. In a recent meeting, councillors complained that one of the area MPs, Dr. Brian Asiimwe, was creating confusion among the electorates.

“Our MP comes to Karugutu and says the district headquarters will be here. When he goes to Rwebisengo, he tells them the headquarters will be there,” the Rev. Thomas Kamuhande said.

Asiimwe denied the allegations. The councillors requested that the creation of Ntoroko district be halted until the Government decides where its headquarters should be located.
