BRIAN Mwesigwa broke the dominance of Jinja players in the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship with a deserved victory in the Lugazi Open at Mehta Golf Club on Sunday.

Mwesigwa, a member of Kabale Golf Club, played level 68 in the final round for an aggregate of 137. That score was enough to beat Jinja-based stars Emma Opio (139) and Said Mawa (140) to the title.

Jinja Golf Club’s Grace Ocici (Kakira Open), Said Mawa (Source of Nile Tour) and Ian Odokonyero (Sadi Memorial) have won three of the four championship tournaments in the eastern region.

Victory in Lugazi hoisted Mwesigwa from fifth to second position in the standings, closing in to within seven points of leader Vincent Byamukama.

In the professional event, Godfrey Mande carded 135 over two days to win.
