FIELD athletes were the revelation of the day at the MTN-sponsored regional championships with Gulu district winning the meet on Saturday.

The northern region track and field event at Pece stadium, produced a number of new athletes, who with good technical support, can put up a great challenge against the current national stars.

Despite national champion Patrick Kibwota winning with 63.65m, javelin produced new revelations. Seven of the over 20 throwers went over 50m –– a feat rarely seen even at the national championships.

Gulu's Brian Ocaya (56.81) and Denis Ojara (54.59m), thrilled the crowds that turned up to watch the one-day trial.

The triple jump was also competitive with Jimmy Owera (14.37), Geoffrey Onen (14.26), Tom Biya (14.25) and Alfred Okot (14.08) in good measure for the cash prizes for the top three performers courtesy of the sponsors MTN.

Discuss had 23 entrants while long jump also had 18 competing. Gulu, dominated the regional event that attracted seven districts and guest athletes. The district also used the event to select their team to the national championships set for Namboole Friday and Saturday.
