Omoro MP Simon Toolit-Akecha is to inspect schools in his area as a move to improve the standard of education. He urged the head teachers to improve their administration, saying it would raise the area’s academic performance.

Toolit-Akecha said in the past, the area used to lead in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) in Gulu district, adding that teachers had to use textbooks supplied by the Government to reclaim their academic position.

He warned teachers who defile pupils, saying they risked imprisonment. Toolit-Akecha cited the deputy head teacher of Odek Primary School, John Charles Anywar, who was jailed for defiling a Primary Six girl from his school in January.

Toolit-Akecha was recently addressing students and teachers at the handover of seven classrooms, an administration block, a VIP latrine and four blocks of teachers’ houses at Odek Primary School in Omoro, Gulu district.

“I am happy that the Northern Uganda Transition Initiative (NUTI), with USAID funding, has changed the image of Odek Primary School. It was a forgotten school,” Toolit-Akecha said.

The head teacher, Augustine Ochola, said 939 pupils would benefit from the new facilities, but added that the school lacked enough desks and chairs.
