KABALE - Over 500,000 trees have been planted since March last year, district forestry officer Audious Kyomukama has said. He said his office distributed seedlings to farmers in Kamwezi, Rubaya and Hamurwa sub-counties. Addressing farmers of Rubaya at the sub-county headquarters on Friday, Kyomukama said the trees planted include pine, eucalyptus, mangoes, avocado, apples, and oranges. He said the project was funded by the African Development Bank and the Government in line with environmental conservation policies.

Mental cases increase

KABAROLE - The district has the highest number of drug addicts in the country, medical reports have said. The medical officer in charge of Buhinga Hospital mental ward, Dr. Martin Ibanda, said the hospital had the second highest number of mental cases next to Butabika in Kampala. He attributed the high number of cases to the smoking of marijuana and the consumption of alcohol. Ibanda on Saturday said the clinic admited between 40 to 50 mentally ill patients every month.

Masindi RDC resigns

MASINDI - The resident district commissioner, Mugisha Muhwezi, has resigned, citing personal reasons. “You may wonder why I have decided to retire at 49 years. I did this for personal reasons which I discussed with my appointing authority, the President,” Mugisha told members of the district security committee at the handover ceremony on Friday. He handed over office to William Kabarole, who will be the acting RDC. Kabarole was the Hoima district deputy RDC.

Bank staff donate blood

MBARARA - Over 30 staff members of Centenary Bank on Friday donated blood at the Mbarara Blood Bank. The bank’s branch manager, Bruno Kajogi, said the move was aimed at saving lives. He said many people needed blood transfusion after accidents, adding that some of the victims were bank customers. “Most of the people who need blood are our clients or relatives of our clients. It was important for Centenary Bank staff to donate blood,” he said.
