PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said he has bitter memories of his first taste of alcohol and wonders why people love the sour drink. Museveni has also asked Ugandans to desist from reckless living so that they stay healthy, strong and live long.

Speaking at the inauguration of a housing estate built by Dynapharm, a food supplements firm, at Mutungo in Kyaddondo South yesterday, Museveni caused laughter when he narrated his first experience with alcohol in 1969 at a bar in Mbarara. He said someone dragged him to Mbarara Hotel where he said they would “talk better.”

“A bar is like a mad house. People were talking loudly, shouting and spitting in each others’ face. You cannot hear what your colleague is saying,” Museveni said.

The President said for the last 43 years he had not tasted alcohol and that is why his supporters say “mzee akyali mbooko” (the old man is still going strong). Museveni said drinking alcohol weakens the body.

“Health is wealth. You should not play with your health by living recklessly,” he cautioned. He said he did not use Dynapharm products because he was healthy.

Museveni’s remarks followed a revelation by his brother Gen. Salim Saleh, that after drinking, he uses Dynapharm products to conceal the odour of alcohol, before meeting the President.

“I went to meet the president. The moment I entered his office he asked: “Saleh have you stopped taking alcohol?” Saleh, narrated.

“Of course, I lied. I wondered why he asked me. I had polished myself with Dynapharm products; Kenzo, Tokola and Tongo kati,” he said to the cheers of distributors and users of the products.

Museveni praised Dynapharm for keeping Ugandans healthy. “Food supplements are fortifiers. They are like immunisation. They prevent you from falling sick,” he commented.

At the occasion, the President handed over seven houses built by Dynapharm for its seven pioneer distributors. The company sells over 800 products. It has operated in Uganda for four years and has 70,000 distributors across the country.
