MAKERERE University is to outsource meals for students, Parliament has heard.

Appearing before the social services committee last week, Samuel Akorimo, the university council secretary, said the decision was reached after considering a paper presented to the council on outsourcing meals for students.

The university has been providing students with food in their halls of residence.

Akorimo said the university would allow private people to provide meals, but not privatise the system.

“The university will not do the actual buying, cooking and serving of food. We are going to give students money and they will pay for the food prepared by private firms.”

He said the firms would use university kitchens to prepare the food and would pay for the electricity and water.

The university, he said, needs sh2.6b to feed the students at sh4,000 per student per day.

Education and sports minister Namirembe Bitamazire said Busitema and Gulu universities were already outsourcing food.
