KEY players Kenneth Kamyuka, Joel Olweny, Nehal Bibodi and Junior Kwebiha will miss the national cricket team’s trip to Bermuda for the ICC Intercontinental Shield.

The quartet have not been named in the 14-man squad that leaves next week for the ten-day tour. They have been rendered unavailable by work and club commitments. Kwebiha and Bibodi have been ruled out by work while Kamyuka and Olweny will not be released by Canada club Brampton Masters as they were not informed in time.

The unavailability of Uganda’s four most experienced cricketers, including its skipper, will leave the team slightly shorthanded for the tour, which is expected to be gruelling with two four-day matches on schedule.

As a result, Akbar Baig has been named new skipper and four players called to the team that played at the World Cup Qualifier in South Africa in April.

Daniel Ruyange, Raymond Otim, Jonathan Ssebanja and Fred Isabirye join the team, the latter two for the first time at senior level. Ruyange returns after injury ruled him out of South Africa while Otim is back after a two-year absence.

National coach Ebrahim Mohammed acknowledged the dent that will emanate from the absence of his experienced players but welcomed it as a chance for the others to stake their claim.

He said: “Obviously every coach wants to have all his best players available but this is also an opportunity for the younger players to prove themselves.”
