Deo Akope rediscovered his form on the final day but could only finish 6th in the KCB Pro-am golf tournament in Mombasa, Kenya on Saturday.

Akope, who scared his opponents with a course record-equalling five under par 66 to lead the opening round, slipped down the leader-board in the subsequent two rounds as Kenyans took charge.

Akope carded 78 to move to second position on day two before falling to 8th after scoring 77 in the third round. He found his form on the final day that saw him hit 71 to tie in sixth place with Kenneth Abuto with a four-day aggregate of 292, six shots behind winner Richard Ainley of Kenya.

Akope who seemed destined for the sh9.7m top cash prize settled for sh2.3m. “I had two bad days which cost me victory. It was a good learning experience though,” Akope stated.

Nile Breweries-sponsored Jinja Golf Club professional Brian Toolit finished a noteworthy 10th while Godfrey Mande (303) was 16th. Toolit returned home with sh1.8m.
