THE rector of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has criticised government officials who frustrate local investors.

Dr. Ahmad Ssengendo said since the university was allocated 10 acres of land in Nakawa by the President, it has faced many challenges from some ministers who want the decision reversed.

A few years ago, President Yoweri Museveni allocated the university the land to construct a commercial building to raise funds to facilitate its activities. But the land is yet to be developed.

Addressing university student leaders at Kabojja female campus on Friday, Ssengendo said the frustrations had delayed the re-development of the land.

“Some say the President gave us five acres, others say we were given only two, yet others are wondering why IUIU. But if you give land to foreign investors, why not the local investor?” he wondered.

Ssengendo also called on the student leaders to preserve and respect their culture in order to succeed.

He said it was very hard to succeed without culture.

“Culture is the direction of one’s destination. Without culture, you can become the most educated fool,” Ssengendo said.

He also appealed to the students leaders to be transparent and disciplined, saying it was their duty to set a good example to the students they lead.

He added that disciplined and transparent students stood many chances of getting good jobs.

The three-day workshop was meant to equip the student leaders with skills of leadership.

The university started in 1988 with its main campus in Mbale.

It has three other campuses in Kampala, Arua, and Kabojja.
