The Police in Mityana district have arrested a couple suspected of stealing a baby. Nyonza Wimaana and her husband Valentino Habimaana of Kasaana village in Myanzi sub-county, Mubende district, allegedly stole the one-day old baby from Mityana Hospital on Friday the district Police commander, Ben Mubangizi, said.

“Wimaana stole the baby from the hospital when the mother went out to bathe,” Mubangizi said. He said the Police, together with other security agents, looked for the suspects until Saturday evening when they were arrested.

“We sent out information. Local leaders, security operatives and all the residents were aware. We were informed that Wimaana had been seen with a baby, yet she was not pregnant,” Mubangizi said.

“We arrested her. She first denied but a medical examination proved that she had not given birth. She later admitted having stolen the baby,” he added.

The baby was handed over to the mother, Eldina Nantale, who was still at Mityana Hospital. Habimaana blamed his wife for deceiving him and denied involvement in the plot to steal the baby.

“I am innocent. This woman deceived that she is pregnant. She left home and said she was going to hospital. I even gave her money. She returned after a few days carrying a baby. I got a feeling that it was not my son because it did not resemble us,” Habimaana said.

Mubangizi said Wimaana would be charged with child theft. He commended all those who supported the Police in the search for the suspects and asked them to always be vigilant to eliminate crime from their community.
