RESIDENTS scrambled for fake goods which the Uganda National Bureau of Standards was burning at the Kitezi dumping site on Saturday.

The disposal turned into a cat-and-mouse chase as residents dodged the only Police officer on guard to grab some goodies for themselves from the raging fire.

Work at the site came to a standstill as the people dived for counterfeit cosmetics, electric cables, bulbs, soap, juice, soda, detergents, shoe polish, toothbrushes and rice.

They also grabbed the stock which was still on the pick-up truck awaiting disposal.

The principle public relations officer, Moses Ssebunya, said the products were worth about sh6m, some of which had been imported or made locally.

The products, he said, were either substandard, fake, counterfeit or made of prohibited ingredients. Ssebunya said the destruction was supervised by Kampala City Council and the National Environment Management Authority.

He said the standards agency still had products worth billions of shillings for destruction across the country.
