THE Police in Jinja district dispersed demonstrators on Monday, who were protesting against Prince Edward Wambuzi assuming the office of the Kyabazinga (king) of Busoga.

The demonstrators were members of the Busoga Bulaale Association. The demonstration started at 9:00am in Jinja town with one of the protestors sounding a drum at the Busoga Square, a signal that Busoga was not at peace.

The southeastern regional Police commander, Christopher Kubai, said the demonstration had beencalled off after a meeting with security personnel and officials of the association led by the chairperson, Moses Bakeera.

They had agreed to set another day for a peaceful demonstration, except for a group of 15 led by Farouk Mujjomba.

The group marched along the Jinja Main Street, while sounding the drum as they headed to the Busoga Kingdom headquarters in Bugembe.

They held placards inscripted with statements like; “Columbus Wambuzi Ovoire ebiragiro bya kkooti” (Columbus Wambuzi you have defied court orders) and another saying “Columbus Wambuzi toli Kyabazinga kutwesibaku Iwe toli waigulu w’amateeka” (Columbus Wambuzi you are not Kyabazinga and you are not above the law).

The protesters blocked the Jinja-Iganga highway at the Police roundabout with big stones, causing a traffic jam. The Police were called in to calm the situation but were overpowered.

The anti-riot Police armed with teargas later forced the protestors to disperse. Kawunhe Wakholi, the acting Kyabazinga, said Prince Edward Wambuzi defied court orders and forcefully assumed the office at Bugembe on September 2.

He urged the Basoga to wait for the court’s decision so that they re-elect a new Kyabazinga peacefully.
