NEXT year (2010), King Oyo will be 18 years old. As part of the preparations, the kingdom has announced the cancellation of this year’s 14th Empango coronation anniversary celebrations. The celebrations were set to take place on Saturday.

In a statement dated August 27, the Tooro Omuhikirwa (premier) William Nyakatura, said: “King Oyo has decided to put the celebrations off and concentrate on preparations for his 18th birthday, which will also mark his assumption of full responsibility of managing his kingdom.”

King Oyo entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1995 as the world’s youngest king when he ascended the throne at three years of age, following the death of his father Patrick Olimi Kaboyo.

Today, as King Oyo waits to assume full powers, kingdom affairs are handled by regents, who include President Museveni.

Tooro kingdom shares close ties with Libya, whose leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was instrumental in funding the renovation of the king’s palace in 2003.

“All people of goodwill are invited to participate in every possible way to make this occasion a success,” Nyakatura said.
