The Police have arrested 11 suspected armed robbers thought to be behind the recent spate of highway robberies and murders in the eastern region.

Iddi Ssenkumbi, the eastern regional Police spokesman, on Friday said the suspects were netted in a two-week joint operation by the Rapid Response Unit and the Police.

The operation was carried out in Busia, Amuria and Mbale districts.

He identified the suspects as Charles Nabende, Haruna Mitti, Asuman Jukira, Fred Ochora, Juma Jackson, Abdallah Wambi, Barazah Makat, Robert Mbeiza, Amos Makokha, Saveri Ebulu and John Guyolo, an army deserter.

“We decided to carry out the operation due to the rise in armed robberies that in most instances led to death since last month. The operation will be ongoing to weed out criminals in the region,” Ssenkumbi explained.

Armed robbers last month shot dead a Police constable, Jimmy Chan Kedi, attached to Bushika Police post in Bududa district before fleeing with his gun. Another two security guards were shot dead while on duty in Mbale.

On August 22, the armed thugs shot dead John Egessa Waata, the Dabani LC3 chairman in, Busia district.

“We appeal to the public to report robbery to the relevant authorities so we can follow them up to pacify our communities.”

He said nine guns, over 200 bullets, mobile phones and household items were recovered in the operation.

Ssenkumbi added that another 15 guns and 400 bullets had been recovered in previous operations in the region since January.

He noted that the thugs acquire some of the guns from Kenya while others were abandoned by remnants of the Lords Resistance Army and the Uganda People’s Army insurgencies in Teso sub-region.
