OVER 30% (about 9,600) children in primary schools in Amuru district have dropped out, the district secretary for education, Gilbert Olanya has revealed.

In an interview on Thursday, Olanya said: “Majority of the drop-outs are girls, who are kept at home to look after young ones.”

In a related story, parents of Otong and Pogo-Ogweri primary schools in Pabbo sub-county during a meeting with local leaders resolved that teachers should cane their children to discipline them.

“Parents resolved that children who don’t stay in school should be caned,” Olanya revealed.

He added that the parents also resolved that indisciplined children should clean latrines and clear bushes as punishment.

The parents also agreed to contribute extra sh5,000 per term for smooth running of the schools.

The money, according to Olanya, would be used for internal exams and pay teachers who were not on the Government payroll.

“Amuru district has a shortfall of about 200 teachers. Those who are not on the Government payroll, are paid by parents,” he said.

Olanya said the sh60,000 to sh200,000 government grant given per term was inadequate to run the schools.
