THE Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo, has asked the Government to make a statement on the UPDF soldiers that died in Mogadishu last week.

Latigo, who raised the matter on Monday, said on several occasions, the UPDF peacekeepers killed in Somalia are buried unceremoniously.

“When will we begin to treat our soldiers as heroes, rather than burying them as chicken thieves?” he asked.

Latigo cited the case of the Italian government who honoured the six soldiers killed in Afghanistan recently.

He warned that if the Government did not produce a statement, the opposition would move a motion demanding the return of the UPDF peacekeepers from Somalia.

The Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, however, said the concerns would be discussed by the Cabinet after which a statement would be made in Parliament.

In a related development, the army has named the four Ugandan peacekeepers who died during the suicide attack as George Okumu from Nebbi, George Wabomba from Manafwa, David Turyasingura from Rukungiri and George Ahimbisibwe from Kanungu.

The army also said 21 Ugandan soldiers were injured in the attack and were undergoing treatment in Nairobi Kenya.
