THE youth in Busoga have been urged to desist from over-consumption of alcohol. They were also advised to embark on income generating activities that would redeem the region from poverty.

The call was made by the trade minister, Eng. Nelson Gagawala Wambuzi, at the launch of Tuzwamu Tutya Gema ku Mwiino Farmers’ Association in Kaliro district on Sunday.

Gagawala, who is also Kaliro MP, said it was absurd for the youth to do nothing but gather in trading centres to gossip, smoke marijuana and drink excessively.

He said Bulamogi and Busoga have a climate that favours agriculture but the people were not making maximum use of their land.

Gagawala also cautioned the youth against joining political ventures which he said are financially crippling.

The director of the farmers’ group, Atanansi Kiige, said the association, which is based in Gadumire sub-county, was formed in 2008 to bring together farmers to fight poverty.

He also said the association builds the farmers’ capacity in modern agriculture by organising workshops to sensitise and give them improved seeds, ploughs and oxen.
