THE Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has dropped murder charges against 10 Peoples Redemption Army (PRA) rebel suspects charged in Arua and Bushenyi courts.

As a result, the Bushenyi Chief Magistrate, Charles Kisakye, on Friday dismissed charges against Robert Tweyambe, Frank Atukunda and Kizza Besigye’s brother, Joseph Musasizi Kifefe (RIP).

The resident State attorney submitted a letter dated August 18 and signed by the DPP, Richard Butera, directing the chief magistrate to withdraw the charges.

The letter states: “This is to inform court that the DPP has decided to discontinue proceedings against Tweyambe and Atukunda charged with murder.” No reason was given for the DPP’s decision.

The trio was on March 1, 2007 granted bail by the High Court in Kampala. However, they were re-arrested and transferred to Bushenyi, where they were charged with murder.

They were accused of murdering John Byarugaba, in Imaramagambo Forest in Bushenyi on July 17, 2002. In the Arua High Court, the prosecutor, Rebecca Adiru, on September 7 told court she had received instructions from the DPP to discontinue murder charges against Kabaka Tabuga, Samson Agupio, Yahaya Amir Asega, Iddi Ahmed Yunus, John Arike, Patrick Okiring and Bruhan Iwago, who had been jointly charged with the murder of Lt. Mawa.

Mawa is said to have been killed on July 21, 2003, in Alube village in Ludara sub-county, Koboko district.
