A WOMAN has died of suspected cholera in Hamasanja village in Busia district. A family source said Rofina Jebakatiti, 55, died on the way to hospital.

The source also revealed that Jebakatiti had earlier attended the burial of her relative who had died of cholera in Bugiri district. Bwire Oundo, the district health officer, confirmed the outbreak and appealed to Busia residents neighbouring Bugiri to avoid attending burials of cholera victims in Bugiri.

The town authorities blamed the outbreak on the poor pit latrine coverage in Busia and the bursting of the Kenyan sewerage system, which contaminated the wells in the town.

Oundo said he had sent medical staff to assess the situation and to sensitise residents on proper sanitation, disposal of wastes and the use and maintenance of pit latrines.

Authorities at Samia Bugwe North health centre said a 10-year-old boy from Mawero in Busia was being treated for cholera. Kampala city authorities have also reported a cholera outbreak in some of the city suburbs.
