EDITOR—The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) would like to respond to a letter entitled “What is UNBS’s position on the ice cream?”

The letter, published on December 30, was written by Dr Jane Apolot who requested for clarification from the UNBS on the quality of ice cream on the market basing on earlier press reports that some ice cream was substandard.

UNBS would like to clarify that during its routine inspection and market surveillance, some ice cream products were found to have fallen slightly short of the requirements of the standards and this was brought to the attention of the respective firms.

In such situations, UNBS recommends suspension of production and offers technical advice until the client puts in place the necessary corrective measures before resumption of production.

This was the case with Cream of Uganda, Snowman, Quest Industries, Rainbow Industries and Fododido. In all these cases the firms addressed the non-conformities to the satisfaction of UNBS and the Dairy Development Authority quality auditors and have since resumed normal production.

All the products of the the firms named are in advanced stages of attaining certification and marking with the UNBS quality mark. UNBS would like to re-assure the public that the ice cream of the firms mentioned is safe for human consumption.
