KASESE district authorities are pushing residents to build pit latrines as means to curb the spread of cholera. The district secretary for health, Rehema Muhindo, said the latrine coverage in the district was 75%.

She was speaking at a district health rapid response taskforce meeting in Rukoki on Monday. The operation, which started on Tuesday, will be led by the district health inspector, Fred Karim.

Kasese, Hima, Katwe- Kabatoro and Mpondwe- Lhubiruha will be inspected first and then sub-counties will be visited next. Karim attributed the persistent cholera outbreak to lack of clean and safe water in the district.

He said most people drink contaminated water from the rivers, lakes and streams without boiling it.

According to records at the district health office, 523 cases and 10 deaths had been registered in the district since March.

Cholera is reportedly spreading rapidly around the country with the current wet season.
