OVER 20 countries are expected to take part in international badminton tournaments Uganda body UBA plans to organise next year, the sport’s chief executive Simon Mugabi, has said.

“This is the start of our players to earn more points ahead of upcoming international events. We also intend to run events from which our players will qualify for international championships,” said Mugabi yesterday.

“This means that more nations will send their teams and individual participants to our meets.”

On top of hosting the traditional Roofings international Open, Uganda will host one leg of the Africa U-18, Africa Individuals and the continental Thomas and Uber Cup qualifiers, all in February at the freshly refurbished Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

The Roofings Open in 2007 attracted participants from 23 countries.
“We will confirm the actual numbers due for participation by January 31, 2010, which is the deadline for registration,” said Mugabi.

He added: “We gained ample experience when we hosted the Roofings. We are now looking forward towards more challenges as we host more continental events.”
